DR ADDIS ABABA OTHOW (PHD)
Addis Ababa Othow Akongdit (PhD): Born in 1974, in a town called Malakal, South Sudan, he attended undergraduate studies at Al–Neelain University, Khartoum where he graduated in 1995 with a bachelor’s degree “Excellent with Second Class Honour” in economics studies. The Faculty Board later awarded him the prize for the best final student in the department of economics in the academic year 1994/1995.
He then joined Al-Neelain University as a Teaching Assistant the following year, before being recruited as a Banking Inspector at the Central Bank of Sudan, Khartoum in 1997. During his period as bank inspector, he has participated in the financial & accounting restructuring of Ivory Bank, Khartoum 1998 and after that he was seconded in 1999 to Council of Southern Sudan as Advisor & planner of Development Projects which were meant to improve the wellbeing of families in Southern Sudan.
The same year 1999, he completed a master’s degree in economic development at Al-Neelain University. Thereafter, he moved to the Netherlands, relentless in his pursuit of knowledge, he continued with additional studies earning himself a Bachelor’s degree in Finance and accounting at Hanze University, Groningen in 2007. Almost immediately after graduating, he landed a job with Dubios & Co Chartered Accountants Amsterdam as an assistant accountant/auditor until 2010 when he later decided to move back to his homeland, the Republic of South Sudan.
MY EXPERIENCE
Joining the Anti-Corruption Commission as a consultant in 2010, it was certain that his sting wouldn’t last once an opportunity to rejoin the finance and banking industry arose, thus, joining the Bank of South Sudan (BSS) in December 2010 as the Head of Non-Banking Division until January 2013, where he was transferred to Head of Planning, Regulation and Licensing Division. He was also a Member of the Steering Committee, Private Sector Development Program, in charge of World Bank, IFC files.
He is currently an adjunct Associate Professor at College of Social & Economics Studies, University of Juba , Chairperson of Rombur National Teachers Training Institute (NTTI) and was a Deputy Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of South Sudan Pensions Fund (SSPF).
In May 2013, he successfully completed his first thesis under the title “Impact of Political Stability on Economic Development- Case of South Sudan” and was awarded a PhD degree in Political Economy from Al–Neelain University, Khartoum, Sudan.
In December 2018, he successfully completed his second thesis under the title “The Role of Institutions in Achieving Financial Stability and Sustainable Economic Development in South Sudan” and was awarded a PhD degree in Business Administration from Faculty of Business and Economics, Atlantic International University, USA.
In December 2019, he successfully completed the Advanced Management Programme (AMP) at Strathmore University, a joint programme between Strathmore Business School (SBS), Lagos Business School (LBS) and IESE Business School, Barcelona, Spain with an aim to help business leaders to develop the professional and personal capabilities required for managing the businesses.
In February 2015, Dr. Addis joined Equity Bank, Nairobi, Kenya as General Manager Operations later on, deployed to South Sudan as Director Operations & Deputy Managing Director, (EBSSL) and then in 2018 promoted as Managing Director of Equity Bank South Sudan Ltd till August 25th, 2022 when he was appointed as 1st Deputy Governor for Policy and Banking, Bank of South Sudan(BoSS). The position that he had held until October 2nd, 2023. In November 2023, Dr. Addis rejoined Equity Bank South Sudan Ltd as its Managing Director.
Dr. Addis has attended many professional programs, executive trainings, workshops, conferences, seminars and etc. across the globe (Harvard & Lagos Business Schools, International Labour Organization (ILO), International and regional Financial Institutions and etc. on leadership, strategy development, governance, winning culture & ethics, organizational and business transformation and change, becoming future ready and etc. which made him gain solid knowledge of economics, finance, accounting, governance and leadership and still very much motivated to learn new things, exposure, challenge and turn that into the reality.
